May 2023
On May 13, 2023, a cold, rainy, and windy Saturday morning, the VPD Research Group and NUANCE Center once again made their way to Northwestern's lakefront for the annual MSSA 5K.
MSSA’s annual 5K walk & run is a fundraiser benefiting the Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Club of Chicago and Letters to a Pre-Scientist.
Always ready to support a good cause, staff, students, faculty and family members ran the course, then socialized over snacks and Gatorade post-event. The NUANCE/VPD team also took home the award for the most participants!
We are so happy each year to help sponsor the event and support MSSA!

New variants to the COVID-19 virus have challenged the capacity of existing testing methods to deliver fast and consistently accurate test results, as PCR tests must be sent to labs and can take days to be returned. Furthermore, rapid antigen alternatives struggle to match up to the gold standard. But to effectively slow the rate of infection, spaces like schools and hospitals need ways to accurately identify infected individuals within their first days of infection as they’re walking in the door.
Now, a novel antigen-based COVID-19 detection method developed in a Northwestern University laboratory demonstrated 100% accuracy in a blind test in five or fewer minutes from swab to signal.

"And Kelly Parker is in March's Biological Sciences Student Spotlight.
Kelly is a fifth year PhD student at Northwestern University in Dr. Vinayak Dravid’s research lab. Her research involves characterizing soft and biological materials, specifically proteins, DNA, and other small biological molecules. Because these materials are both low-contrast and susceptible to beam damage when imaging, Kelly’s research focuses on improving contrast while avoiding high electron doses; this includes using low-voltages, particularly in scanning electron microscopes with transmission detection (STEM), for high-contrast, high-throughput imaging. Kelly’s work, thus, enhances the imaging tools required to answer questions related to the characterization of various biological materials."
