Research Objectives and Approach

As a joint student with Mirkin Group, I propose to use a bio-nano-combinatorial approach to build metasurfaces comprised of plasmonic nanoparticles positioned with sub-nanometer precision across centimeter–scale samples. I am working on an approach that combines top-down and bottom-up processes, wherein gold nanoparticles are assembled into ordered arrays via DNA hybridization events onto a gold film decorated with DNA-binding regions defined using electron beam lithography. Subsequently, surface-assembled particles can be used as a template for the layer-by-layer growth of nanoparticle superlattices through DNA-mediated assembly. Using this platform, I propose to systematically study how structural parameters impact the collective optical properties of metasurfaces to explore emergent nanophotonic behavior.
