Research Projects

Despite substantial progress in the treatment of cancer, it remains the second leading cause of death in the United States and is expected to become the leading cause of death within the next decade. The prevalence and gravity of the disorder, its refractoriness to current approaches, and the toxicity and disabilities caused by current therapies suggest that fundamentally new approaches must be developed. We envision development, characterization and preclinical validation of magnetic nanostructures (MNS) based "smart" nanoplatforms that will selectively accumulate and aggregate within tumors in vivo. Once accumulation occurs, ideally the imaging or therapeutic contrast should scale more than linearly with the number of assembled MNS. Our hit-to-lead efforts is to demonstrate such theranostic contrast for simultaneous magnetic resonance imaging T2 relaxivity and hysteresis-induced thermal activation therapy due to iron oxide core. We are developing new approaches to engineer functionalize MNS to accumulate preferentially within tumors rather than in normal tissue.
